Of all the basic foundations required for playing guitar, guitar chords are the most fundamental. This is due largely to the fact that even music based on melodic lines are in fact being outlined by an invisible chordal background when composed.
Buy a guitar chord book and it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the 1000′s of chords and names contained with the pages. In truth however, you only 10 basic shapes to open up 100′s of songs!
We group guitar chords into respective families based upon their type and how they are built. As a beginner you need only concern yourself with 3 main families of chords. They are Major, Minor and Dominant 7 chords. Using these you’ll have the basic structure required for songs.
For beginners it can be quite a challenge to sound guitar chords clearly, even the easier ones. Most find that learning the shapes are relatively easy however. If you are not used to playing guitar it’s likely that your fingers will hurt until a layer of harder skin has built up. This normally takes a month or two.
I refer to this as a kind of ‘pain barrier’ which all guitar players must go through. After a few weeks the skin on the tops of your fingers will harden and once this happens, playing guitar chords will no longer hurt you.
We divide chords into two main forms, Barre chords and open chords. Open chords consist of all the beginner guitar chords when first learning to play. They use open strings are stay fixed in the one place.
Barre chords on the other hand are movable and by transposing the shape up or down the neck you can produce different chords. A fair amount of strength is required to perform Barre chords so that all notes sound clearly however once you achieve this it’s easy to form them anywhere on the neck.
Try to resist the urge to learn an overwhelming amount of guitar chords in the beginning stages. It’s counter productive and will ultimately frustrate you. Instead concentrate on a small group of highly used ones and put them into action through songs. By approaching guitar chords in this way you’ll develop a very useable collection over which you have a mastery.

If you are a music fanatic, especially one that has a craving for guitars, there is no way that you might not have heard of the name Neal Schon. This world renowned Oklahoma guitarist is considered by many to be guitar’s God. This American guitarist who was born on the 5th of February, 1954, is famous for his performances with the world famous band Journey. Of all the members of the band Journey, Neal is the only one to have played in all of their recordings. Neal, who was born in an air force base situated close to Oklahoma City, picked up the guitar at the tender age of 5.
Few people know that his father too was into music and was a jazz saxophonist. Neal was a fast learner and at the young age of 15 he joined Santana. Before forming the group Journey in 1973, which he still leads, Neal was connected with Azteca. Those who are familiar with the playing style of this guitarist consider it as soulful. Neal has also cut albums with many other musicians, apart from the fourteen studio albums he has made with the group he founded.
Early on in his career, Neal had been requested by another guitar great, Eric Clapton, to join his group, Derek and the Dominos. Neal turned down this offer since he was first called upon by Santana. For recording the album Santana III, Neal Schon joined Santana. The first guitar used by Neal was an acoustic Stella and this fact might be interesting for those who are interested in learning electric guitars. 2 years later this guitar was replaced for a Gibson ES-335. Neal substituted his stolen Gibson with the 1956 make Les Paul Goldtop reissue and he performed using the same for quite a number of years.
Gibson guitars are currently endorsed by this famous guitarist. There are some limited editions signature models also available which are known as the “Neal Schon Signature Model Custom Les Paul”. Only 35 numbers of such custom guitars were manufactured according to the official Gibson website. Neal has also used a number of other guitars during his vast career and Goldin guitar is one of them which he had used for the solo album “Beyond the Thunder”, which was released towards the end of the 1980′s. Gibson, which manufactures some of the best solo guitars, is endorsed by Schon.

George Jones was one of the hardest drinking, fastest living son of a guns in all of country music history. Admittedly living a life modeled after his hero, Hank Williams, George Jones blazed a trail of infamy and heartache across the wide-open plains of country music history. Known for his distinctive voice and loose phrasing style, the exploits of George Jones have passed from mere stories into legend.
It’s true: according to Country Music Television, Jones is the “the greatest living country singer” today. In true George Jones style, I’m sure hed say something to the effect, “it’s the living part that’s tricky.” His clever turn of phrases and unusual vocal style can best be sampled on such legendary hits as “Hello Walls” and “If the Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me.” Then again, all of his songs carry that signature sound.
Jones was famously (or infamously) married to Tammy Wynette. This marriage made in madness was the stuff of legend, often requiring the services of the local sheriff to help them mediate. Of course that’s a fancy word for “cool off.” Between his drinking problem and her drug addiction, it was not the high point of marital bliss for either one of them, When it all came crashing down in 1975, no one was surprised.
Despite being in to his seventies now, George Jones has not stopped recording or touring. Indeed, he is on tour this summer and is coming to a local gin joint near you. Though there might no be as much pep in his step, his voice is as rich and full as ever. No one can turn a song like The Possum. For those of you not in the know, that’s his nickname.
It has never been easier to get your hands on a pair of George Jones tickets. You just have to follow the links to the best little booking service around. Don’t wait until the last minute and fall prey to the scalpers. Get a great ticket at a fair price and sleep well at night. But do it quick, because the Possum is not on tour for long.
