This is how it looks to your audience. You walk up to them on the street, or to your friend, and say that something is wrong with your watch. Lately you’ve noticed that timepieces that you touch immediately go crazy, and lose their ability to keep proper time. You ask to borrow their watch, so you can set yours. They’ll think you’re joking, and won’t think too much of it.

At the same time you set your watch, get them to double check the correct time. They will, usually by looking at a clock on the wall or by checking with somebody else. You make sure they watch you set your watch, to ensure you’ve got the right time. You thank them, and hand them their watch back, but explain to them that you’ve somehow messed it up. You tell them to sandwich it between their hands, without looking at the face, and tell them to guess how far off their watch is from the correct time. Most people will guess five minutes or so, which means they’ll be shocked to see their watch is off by around thirty minutes.

Here’s the trick. First you need to choose somebody who’s watch has a large stem that is easy to turn. You hold their watch in your left hand, and you’re watch in your right. While you are focusing on setting your own watch, while they are concentrating on your watch, you quickly move their watch out of view and re-set the time. You can quickly do this when they look away to verify the correct time.

This illusion is heavily based on misdirection, and the skill of quickly changing the time on their watch with only your left hand. Obviously, you’ll need to practice. You can easily practice on your own watch, if it has a big stem, while you are sitting around watching TV.

The best way to apply the misdirection is just to play dumb, as if you really have no idea what is going on. Begin the illusion as if you are genuinely asking them for the time, but concerned that you have a strange effect on time pieces. Obviously, if you say up front your going to do a magic trick involving their watch, they’ll watch you more closely. This works great as a conversation starter at bars, parties or anybody you want to make a lasting impression on. Have fun.

What to do

You must be careful what events to cover if you want to make money. Only where people want to retain memories will it be worth your while.

One idea is to go to kids sports events. Get permission from the coach to click pics for the parents watching and then start clicking away. If you turn up with a great big telephoto lens like the ones used for pro coverage of events, you will be taken seriously. Make sure you get all the kids doing great action shots and then hand out flyers to all the kids’ parents watching with your web address. If you can write down the parents email address so you can email them the URL of you site then upload the pics to your web site that day and email everyone. If you have a simple shopping cart set up you can make money in a few hours as people pop in to see the pics and buy them for $20 or more a pop.

You can do a similar thing with weddings. Take all the normal pictures as part of the wedding coverage but then get your URL printed on the wedding invites and all the other wedding materials and also get an email list of all the wedding guests, offer the couple a nice 20% discount for doing this and then take lots of extra pics at the wedding of the guests doing all the things they do. Upload all the pics to your site and send the emails. You will then make a lot more money than the 20% discount it cost you because then 20 or 30 people will be also purchasing your pics at $20 or more a shot straight from your site. Charging a higher price for high res pics is also a great money spinner.

The trick is to find a niche where you can excel by being the best photographer in the room, and offering an easy way for people to buy your photos.

Dog shows, fashion shows, horse shows, car shows, livestock competitions, rock shows, – the list goes on. Keep your eye out in the events section of your local paper to see what is happening. Always ask for permission to shoot pics and if you need to offer the people 10% of the income if feel you need to so you can get easy access.

Here’s how the trick looks to your friends. You tell them you have recently developed some telekinetic abilities. You can tell them you were hit by lighting, or a lamp fell in the bathtub while you were taking a bath or something. You skills are fairly new, so you are still working out the kinks. You can only repel small objects with the power of thought. You haven’t yet learned how to lift up X-Wing fighters like Yoda.

You ask if somebody has a cigarette. Put the cigarette on the table, and begin to summon your newly found telekinetic skills. Hold your hand cupped behind the cigarette, and it will mysteriously roll toward you. You place both hands on either side of the cigarette, and it moves away from you. With the right set up, people will be looking at the cigarette and not your face.

It is a good idea to practice before hand, so you know exactly how to position your lips, and how to quickly blow without detection. Also make sure you aren’t doing this in an area with any transient wind, like from an overhead fan or an open window. Like any other simple trick, this works best with a long, convoluted setup, and then quickly doing the trick and removing the prop. Be careful not to spend too much time ”in position” than you have to. After a few practice sessions, you’ll expertly be able to blow your breath without detection from others.

It goes without saying that the best place this works is in bars or parties, and when you are talking about something other than magic. Just covertly introduce the idea of you suddenly having psychic powers. Place the cigarette on the table in front of you, and get on with your patter for a while before you do the trick, that will increase their focus on the cigarette itself, and not you. A great way to cover yourself, is to act surprised every time the cigarette moves, as if you still can’t believe your telekinetic powers. Have fun with this.
